Sophia Taillet - GLASS : FLEXIBIlITY OF MATTER

27 July 2019

Sophia Taillet is an artist-designer based in Paris. A graduate of the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts décoratifs, she has since developed a practice at the frontier of art and design. From object to space, its process is characterized by the exploration of matter as a trigger for imagination. From steel wireframes to curved glass furniture, Sophia Taillet develops a series of objects that draw graphic forms in space and provoke a sensation of visual lightness, a sensory escape.

Inspired by a formal vocabulary linked to the world of playgrounds by architect Aldo Van Eyck, she created a series of suspended seats «le temps suspendu» for the Palais de Tokyo in 2017. She then went on to create a playground for the Grands Voisins in Paris during a 4-month artist’s residency. In 2018, she presented her Helik duo light luminaire during the Venice Biennale of Architecture. This object-sculpture is the result of research on the flexibility of steel.

From the exploration of raw materials such as steel, her interest is gradually focused on glass thanks to an artist’s residency in a glass centre in Yzeure. Sophia Taillet develops a series of objects exploring the different techniques of glass processing. From thermoprocessing to blown glass, it challenges the flexibility of the material. This residence is presented at the French design by VIA gallery in June 2019.

In parallel with her practice, Sophia Taillet has developed numerous collaborations with photographers, video artists and architects.

This collection presents Sophia Taillet’s artist-designer residency at the Yzeure glass factory.

Linked to a reflection on the predetermined functionality of industrial materials, this exhibition is the result of research into glass and its various transformation techniques.

This research was carried out with the help of the apprentice craftsmen of the Glass Factory.

Inspired by the effects of reflection and texture caused by water and light, Sophia Taillet explores the varieties of textures and shapes of this material. Thanks to high-temperature ovens, she discovered a formal vocabulary that gradually developed into a series of furniture: the CURVE collection.

The stability of each object is based on the interdependence between surface and support, imbalance and weightlessness to create an aerial and luminous design.
