DDW Talks & Topics: Wednesday 24 October 2018

With work from 2600 designers, covering just about every area in our society, the event kicks up some dust for debate and delivers food for thought. DDW presents you a daily summary of debates, lectures and seminars spread across Eindhoven.

9.30 – 11.00 | ALL INCLUSIVE CYBORG TALK: TRANSPARENCY VS. PRIVACY

Data ethics is becoming increasingly important in fashion and wearables design. Responding to the demand for transparency with loss of privacy as a result has unevenly burdened the (ex)citizen. Critically approaching technology bubbles remains necessary to generate awareness and seek protection together.

Learn more about the Social Design Route. The route investigates how designers can strengthen our social fabric, raise awareness for social issues, help create an inclusive society and promote new cultural behaviour.

Embassy of Health
During the exhibition Chronic Health, an 'open lab' will be held in a glass house, in which citizens, care professionals, designers and makers can work on the design of 'open design' care applications: MakeHealth Live! The process and the possibilities of makeable care are shown.

Performances, films, talks, presentations and debates are staged by students, graduates, alumni and prominent professionals from the design field and the extended DAE community.

ACTION
Embassy of Circularity
What is the impact of circular business models and what are the (financial) consequences for the consumer, producer and financial institutions? In this workshop you will discover the possibilities and impossibilities of circular design of houses, together with designers, pioneers and experience experts.

Experts share their insights about 'the train journey of tomorrow' in the What If Lab of NS (Dutch Railways).

14.00 – 15.00 | HOW TO CREATE BIOPHILIC BUILDINGS FOR A REGENERATIVE FUTURE?

This workshop is aimed at architects, engineers, developers and product manufacturers interested in innovative and transformative solutions, providing insights from leaders in the green building community through real-world examples while providing tools and techniques that can be applied locally.

15.00 – 17.00 | MADE BY RAIN WITH JAPANESE CRAFTSMANSHIP
Van Abbemuseum, Bilderdijklaan 10
In collaboration with potter Fukusen Gama, designer Aliki van der Krujis came to a process to ‘draw’ on porcelain with rain. Now the plates are in production and distributed by Thomas Eyck. In the lecture, Aliki and Fukusen Gama will talk about the collaboration, how the project started and the current state of affairs.


16.00 – 17.00 | DDW LIVE AT 4 - TOLERANCE: DESIGNING A SOCIAL ATTITUDE

Current turbulent times are the cause of growing cultural gaps and hardening viewpoints, which is why it has never been so necessary to consciously work on our interrelations. In a world where it’s most difficult to be heard, a growing number of people are investing in finding new ways to live together and design an all-inclusive society.

With ‘Ontwerp voor de toekomst’ - including architecture, e-culture, and design -  the Raad voor Cultuur has investigated which steps the government and the field can take to make the creative, critical and innovative strength of the Dutch design sector future-proof. Their advice is presented, followed by a panel discussion with interesting speakers.

Designers want to change the world for the better, help society and solve every problem out there, so much is clear. Who will pay for it and who will make sure these great ideas are actually going to make a positive impact? During the Social Design Debate, we will talk to those that have real life experience on that hotter-than-hot topic of Social Design.


18.00 – 19.00 | CREATE OUT LOUD #4: UNBOXING DDW 2018 WITH RAVI NAIDOO

Where would YouTube be without unboxing? For years now, vloggers are raking in royalties just by unpacking the latest gadgets. MU investigates this amazing phenomenon: what does unboxing look like in real life? The redaction of Create Out Loud was looking for a critical connoisseur, a spontaneous commentator to publicly unwrap some gems of Dutch Design. They found their man in DDW ambassador Ravi Naidoo.

Powered by the BNO together with a group of over 50 graduates, the goal for these sessions is to give everyone interested more insights in the design world. From practical tips to interesting questions raised.

19.00 – 23.00 | THE ACCELERATION OF GENERATIVE DESIGN
Igluu, Lichttoren 32
Generative design is the creative collaboration between a designer and digital technology. The output could be images, sounds, architectural models, animation and many more. Digital Wednesday showcases a breathtaking variety of applications.


19.30 – 22.00 | HOME SMART HOME - NIGHT
Effenaar, Dommelstraat 2
What is the influence of smart digital systems on our personal lives, relationships and identity? Is there still space for human contact if we are surrounded by connected devices that improve our lives? What are the moral and ethical dilemmas relating to the smart connected devices that are conquering our homes? This is the central theme during VPRO Medialab’s Home Smart Home Night.
