DDW20 is in full swing! Of course, the festival will take place entirely online this year, but with a well-filled programme full of TV shows and live streams. Here we give you a daily overview of what you can see on DDW TV. We also include several Livestreams, but make sure to explore the online programme for more!

DDW TV

For starters…

We start off each day with ‘For starters...’, a programme in which design journalist and connoisseur Jeroen Junte (Editor in Chief DesignDigger) will talk with emerging talents and familiar faces from the design field.The physical DDW may not take place, but Jeroen ensures that all Design Areas still make an appearance. For example, Bernhard Lenger will join on behalf of Campina, Lucas de Man on behalf of Strijp-S, Piet Hein Eek on behalf of Strijp T+R and so on. Of course, there is also plenty of room for the virtual programme. As a committee member of Dutch Design Awards, Jeroen will also give a daily wake-up call to the DDA winner of the previous day. In short, a dynamic start to your online DDW visit!

Embassy of Circular & Biobased Building

Daring to radically challenge the current techniques used for designing and building a home”, that's what the pioneers from the world of circular and biobased construction set to work. Lucas De Man takes you through 'The Exploded View'. A detached house that has been rebuilt using circular methods and biobased materials to show the existing and future possibilities of sustainable building and living.

Designers Dialogues Live: Pleun van Dijk & Hannah van Luttervelt

After three editions of Blank Space Magazine and accompanying articles on ddw.nl, we are switching things up; Designer Dialogues will be broadcasted live on DDW TV. Various designers from the past editions will return and interview each other about the DDW20 theme; The new intimacy. A programme by designers for designers with new matches and familiar faces! Designer Dialogues Live is powered by Blank Space Magazine.

Embassy of Health

The past few months have made us think more than ever about health and care. There is a growing awareness that health is not a ready-made product of our healthcare system, but has everything to do with how we organize our lives. But what do we actually find important? Together with healthcare professionals, designers explore the values that are central to our health. In the opening speech of the Embassy of Health, Paulien Melis talks to philosopher Henk Oosterling and designers Frank Kolkman and Mario de Zeeuw about the future of healthcare. Will we soon return to our 'old' systems or will we be able to break new ground? Happily ever after...

Design United: Hybrid

This Design United event zooms in on design-research projects in the Netherlands’ four technical universities. What role can design play in tackling five big themes? Join five livestreamed talk shows tackling five big themes. The shows will take place every afternoon from 13:00 -14:00, starting Monday 19 and running till Friday 23 October. Hosted by Isolde Hallensleben, the daily shows feature up-and-coming design researchers from the Technical Universities of Delft, Eindhoven, Twente and Wageningen University & Research, as well as subject experts. From the comfort of your own home, you can expect a ring-side view of lively discussions, fuelled by intriguing designs.

Antenna: Esmée Willemsen & Anna Koppmann

Looking for a new view on design that really makes a difference? Here are 10 international design graduates, originating from 5 continents, ready to share their social solutions with you. These innovative designers excel with idealistic values, ground breaking ideas, and cross-border visions.

Class of 2020: St. Joost

DDW invited all Dutch design schools to put together an exhibition on the theme of The New Intimacy. Each school approached this in its own way. Some chose to curate a special new expo and others more a collection of graduates. All exhibitions together show the unique and high quality of Dutch design education. Each school has its own emphasis, its own signature, and that is reflected in the exhibition. When the physical DDW stopped, five of the participating schools decided to show their physical installation in the schools. In the upcoming videos you will see that work passes by, with explanations by students and curators.

DAE: The Arena

With design research at its heart, The Arena is Design Academy Eindhoven’s (DAE) in-house platform for furthering dialogues on design discourse. It addresses and contextualises aspects of design practice that inform and surpass a final object or outcome.Tune in to DDW TV daily on  ddw.nl  from 14:30-15:30 for panel discussions on the dilemmas of institutional critique, bio-politics and collective care, power structures behind invisible infrastructures, interrogations on cultural heritage and more.

DDA Award Show Live 2020: Service & Systems

Every year, Dutch Design Awards (DDA) honours the best Dutch designers and their most impressive and groundbreaking projects. Various disciplines, viewpoints and solutions are judged in light of the impact they have on our society. The 2020 award ceremony has a new, digital packaging. This year sees a first for DDW; ‘DDW TV’. A studio from which DDA will organise a talk show everyday. These talk shows will be presented by a fantastic host, Isolde Hallensleben, and give us the opportunity to take a closer look at the three nominees per category. Who they are, what they do and above all, what their project is about? Trends and developments from the field will be discussed and to top it all off, the winners will be announced. A mixture of content, intimacy and celebration!

WDE Talks: Energietransitie

How can we use the energy transition to make the necessary improvements to our existing buildings? And how can we do this in the most attractive way possible? With designer Tjeerd Veenhoven on 'the greenest station' and designer Marjan van Aubel on making government buildings more sustainable.

DDW Talks: Designing Society

Social design is a young discipline, searching for a definition and a place in the world. The outside expert view on the discipline of social design is an underexposed perspective. That is why Social Design Showdown is facilitating a dialogue between non-social designers about social design. Together these external experts will talk about one central question: “Is there a place for social design in this world?”

A broad range of experts will participate in this dialogue, amongst others: change expert Marguerithe de Man (SIOO), OpenEmbassy founder Renée Frissen, psychologist Eefje Cobussen and public administrator Andrea Frankowski (NSOB). Daniëlle Arets will moderate the dialogue.

Polder Tv

Polder TV marks the beginning of the Polder Triennal, a new initiative that shows, discusses, and unpacks ideas about the changing relationships between cities and the countryside. Makers and thinkers from the Dutch polder region and beyond develop tv broadcasts from the farmstead of designer-architect Rianne Makkink. For the occasion of Dutch Design Week 2020 the terrain in the Noordoostpolder, the most iconic agricultural landscape of The Netherlands, is turned into a temporary tv studio.

VPRO Tegenlicht - De slag om het internet

Ronald Duong works with experts to find out how we, as users, can reclaim the internet from Sillicon Valley. During DDW, Duong talks to privacy designers and web experts and begins his long search for internet freedom. During DDW, the kick-off takes place of Duong's six-month quest, which from then on can be seen on vpro.nl/tegenlicht.

Dezeen: The New Intimacy

A focus on the search for new forms of intimacy. A new equilibrium in a time when Covid-19 is one of the major factors accelerating our exploration of different ways of relating to each other and the world around us.
Designers taking part are Mark van der Net, who will discuss his augmented reality work The Missing Festival, Victoria Ayo, who will speak about her project Birth Reborn, on using design to address barriers to equitable maternal care for black women, and Ali Tal'at Ali As'ad, who will talk on the subject of the intimacy of safe spaces in the city live from Amsterdam's Moederhuis.

Food Design: Current State of Affairs

The domain of food design has long been much more than designing food(materials). The role of the designer in this is increasingly that of a catalyst to to design and initiate a transition of eating culture. That food culture transition is necessary to achieve the climate targets but also for the general aim of a broader public health and animal welfare. So food alone is not the only thing the food designer. Also topics such as urban planning in relation to the Food flow, science, waste and biology are the fields of food designers. What is the current state of affairs of the most prominent food designers keep?
We speak with the designers Chloé Rutzerveld, Annelies Hermsen and Marije Vogelzang.

What's a body - Body Talk

For six weeks, students from Fontys ARTCODE explore future relationships between technology and the body. During Dutch Design Week, they livestream their results every day from 12:00 to 16:00.

Designers Jessica den Hartog and Michelle Baggerman are both fascinated in their own way by the possibilities of waste plastic. This time with the aim of developing a yarn from the material HDPE. We are in the middle of the process and like to talk with people about the textile of the future.
