Studies on dynamics, distances and objects of the contemporary table

This project was part of DDW 2023

An installation that explores the act of sharing a table by examining its history, material elements, and personal stories. With a table setting as the main space, the installation invites visitors to reconnect with the importance of this communal space in the present day.

Table dynamics

At a time when we sit less and less at a communal table and increasingly dine alone in front of our electronic devices, the project reflects on the role and significance of the ritual of eating together. The installation immerses you in intimate stories, scents, shapes, and arrangements, but above all, it questions what these moments do for our well-being and communal bonds.

The sizes, positions, and quantity of tableware contribute to the dining experience and also establish dynamics during the meal. From a historical perspective, table setting protocols divide the table into a set of individual spaces for each person to eat. This has shaped the traditional way of setting the table in Western societies. The project aims to examine and break away from this traditional way of table setting, viewing the table as a tool to expand relationships rather than restrict them. Will the dynamics at the table change with a different arrangement or form?
